Rainy Season Driving Checklist

As the leaves turn and the air cools, fall brings with it a beautiful change in scenery and a lot more rain. It’s the perfect time to think about your vehicle’s safety.

Wet roads can be dangerous, especially if your tires are worn. Low tread depth significantly increases your risk of hydroplaning, where your tires lose contact with the road surface due to water buildup. This can lead to loss of control, skidding, and serious accidents.

Before you hit the road this fall, make sure to check the following:

Tire Tread Depth: use the penny test or a tread gauge to ensure your tires have enough grip. If the tread is below 2/32 of an inch, it’s time to replace them.

Tire Pressure: cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop. Check your tire pressure regularly and keep it at the manufacturer’s recommended level.

Headlights & Brake Lights: make sure all lights are working properly so you can see — and be seen — in low visibility conditions.

Brakes: wet roads require responsive braking. If your brakes feel spongy or make noise, get them inspected.
