How to Extend the Life of Your Tires

Whether you’re storing off-season agricultural tires or keeping spares in your garage, how you store them at home matters. Proper storage helps preserve tire integrity, extend lifespan, and ensure peak performance when you’re ready to roll again.

Before putting tires away, wash off dirt, chemicals, and debris. Use mild soap and water, and make sure they’re completely dry to prevent moisture damage or mold.

Heat and humidity are tire killers. Store tires in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heaters, or motors that emit ozone — which can degrade rubber over time.

If possible, cover your tires with opaque, breathable covers to shield them from light and dust. Avoid plastic bags unless they’re ventilated, as trapped moisture can cause damage.

For mounted tires, store them vertically to avoid flat spots. If you must stack them, rotate the stack periodically. For unmounted tires, vertical storage on a clean surface is best.

Keep tires away from solvents, fuels, lubricants, and other chemicals that can weaken the rubber compound.

If tires are stored for extended periods, rotate their position every few months to prevent pressure points and deformation.

Tire racks help keep tires off the ground and allow for better air circulation. They’re especially useful in shops or garages with limited space.
